KARINE LAVAL

HISTOIRES D’EAU

Opening Reception for the artist: Saturday, June 4, 4:00-9:00 PM, in conjuction with the Avenues of Art & Design 8th Annual Art Walk.

MB Fine Art Los Angeles is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by French photographer Karine Laval. Laval’s Swimming Pool series evokes a feeling of playful nostalgia by effectively capturing the innocence of sunny summer days. The opening of Histoires d'Eau will coincide with the 8th Annual Avenues of Art & Design Walk.

Karine Laval’s bleached-out, neo-constructivist studies of people intersecting with architecture at public swimming pools taken in France, Portugal, Spain and Norway are an amazing adventure in color. Divers, sunbathers and swimmers are captured in splendid compositions of frozen movements in the most serene of settings. Although their actions and expressions are natural and spontaneous, the scenes appear composed by a silent choreographer when moments are isolated within the frame of her camera. These public places are particularly interesting because they mix the natural element of water within an urban space where people can be at leisure, and where they seem liberated from any social reference. The cool tones of water and sky transport the viewer to a completely different part of the world in the brief moment that has been captured.

Karine Laval is an internationally exhibited artist. She was named one of PDN Magazine’s Top 30 Photographers of 2005 and lives in Brooklyn New York.
